the Greater Community of Weilerswist
In 1969, a community restructuring integrated many previously independent communities into larger units. This reform also combined the
communities of Weilerswist, Vernich, Lommersum, Metternich und Müggenhausen to a so called Greater Community. The different parts of
this community kept many of their specific characteristics until today though. For example Lommersum, due to its centuries long affiliation
with the Spanish Netherlands, is still called "Little Spain". For a long time. agriculture was the region's main source of income. In the
meantime, however, trade and industries have been developed as well.

Moreover, many people from the nearby cities have found a new home here,
and many people from Weilerswist commute every day to their workplaces, primarily in Cologne and Bonn. Even though Weilerswist has
adopted the label "Green Community", it is by far not as rural as the towns in the Eifel hills a bit further southwards. Instead, the
Greater Community has a position between countryside and suburbia, which does combine convenciences from both ways of living. Rural calmness
mixes with good shopping facilities and an excellent connection to the regions two major cities. And so, Weilerswist has some quality of
life to offer.
